This application is designed to capitalize on the ability of NaBH4 to store relatively large quantities of energy in a safe, simple and cost efficient manner for long periods of time - to be available at short notice whenever needed - usually when there are unexpected conditions or emergencies.
Technically, this would be a GFCT system integrated with a fuel cell that is preloaded with NaBH4 to provide reliable clean, reliable "back-up" energy for critical applications whenever there is an interruption to the regular energy supply. Because the EBES unit can be refilled with additional NaBH4 when whenever preloaded quantities are used up, the EBES can provide "emergency" supply over a prolonged period if necessary. Safe, simple and cost efficient storage/logistics also means that the end user can always store additional NaBH4 "on-site" to provide greater reliability and resilience where required without much additional costs. Potential use cases include providing emergency back-up energy for:
- Rural/Remote Vaccine and Pharmaceutical Storage;
- Remote Telecommunication Towers;
- Underground Bunkers & Security Installations;
- Remote Island Microgrids;
- Rural/Remote Medical & Healthcare Services;
We believe that these critical applications can justify the "green premium" today due to the relatively higher price of NaBH4 - which will come down substantially over time as production is ramped up at scale in the most productive locations on the planet.
It is important to note that batteries do not perform the same function. The cost structure of batteries are designed to be highly economical (on a cost per kWh basis) when they are used very often. The capital cost is high, but marginal cost per cycle is relatively low. Solid H2 logistics has the opposite profile. The upfront capital cost is much lower, but marginal cost per kWh will be higher. "Emergency back-up" energy by definition, are unexpected events that happen occasionally and when it happens, the amount of energy that is required may be well in excess of what a battery can store. Both these factors, plays directly into the unique strengths of Solid H2 Logistics.
